How much difference does it make to send my kids to the top public schools?

I live in a pretty good neighborhood where not many kids drop out of school. 5-10 miles away, there are “better” neighborhoods where the houses cost twice as much, but the schools score in the top 10% of the state.

I can afford to move, but I am not sure if I want to. I have friends that are working like crazy so they can send their kids to one of the top public schools. I’m wondering if I could do better with a decent school but be around my wife and kids more. Am I missing something? Why are so many of my friends taking on heavy mortgages to do this? If my daughter turns out to be a genius, would I be better off in a private school anyway? Anyone?
